From 12 to 14 March 2026, Visa Travel & Tours had the pleasure of organizing a memorable 3-day journey through some of Burundi’s most fascinating cultural, historical, and natural attractions. This private experience combined wildlife discovery, cultural immersion, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic encounters with Burundi’s rich heritage.

Day 1 – Rusizi National Park & Bujumbura Discovery

The adventure began in Bujumbura with a visit to the beautiful Rusizi National Park. Travelers enjoyed observing hippos and a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. Although the crocodiles were not visible during the visit, the local guides explained that they had gone hunting and had not yet returned to the riverbanks.

One unforgettable moment was witnessing two different hippo families interacting in the water. When one hippo accidentally moved too close to another group, a spectacular territorial fight broke out between the dominant males, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the behavior of these impressive animals.

The guides also shared fascinating information about hippo family life. They explained that when a female baby hippo is born, the father often drives her away and hides her far from the group because the mother may see her as a future rival. Likewise, when a male baby hippo is born, the mother protects and hides him to prevent the father from attacking him as a potential future competitor.

The day continued with a discovery tour of Bujumbura, including the famous Livingstone–Stanley Monument, an important historical landmark linked to Africa’s exploration history. Lunch and relaxation by Lake Tanganyika completed the first day.

During the journey, our Italian guest expressed his admiration for the kindness and hospitality of the Burundian people. He was deeply touched by the joy, smiles, and warm welcome he received everywhere, even from people living very modestly. He was also surprised to see cyclists being pulled by vehicles on the roads, a scene quite unique and unforgettable to him.

Day 2 – Tora Tea Plantation & Source of the Nile

The second day took travelers through Burundi’s scenic countryside toward the Tora Tea Plantation. Visitors discovered the beauty of Burundi’s green hills, agricultural landscapes, and traditional rural life.

The journey then continued to Rutovu, home to the southern Source of the Nile at Rutovu. Travelers visited the Nile Pyramid Monument and learned about the geographical and historical significance of this symbolic site. After lunch and relaxation, the group proceeded to Gitega, Burundi’s political capital, for an overnight stay.

Day 3 – Gitega Cultural Heritage Experience

The final day focused on Burundi’s rich cultural heritage. Travelers visited the National Museum of Gitega to explore traditional artifacts, royal history, and Burundian cultural identity.

One of the highlights of the journey was the visit to the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, where visitors experienced the famous Royal Drums of Burundi. Our guest was especially amazed by the extraordinary rhythm, coordination, and energy of the drummers’ performance, which created a truly unforgettable cultural experience.

After lunch and scenic stops along the way, the tour returned to Bujumbura, marking the end of an enriching and unforgettable journey.
